Stockbury Dog Club

BBQ

Held 29th July 2007

This year the barbeque was preceded by a presentation about the Bella Moss Foundation which is one of the charities we have supported this year. Jill Moss who is the Foundation's president started with a talk on how and why the foundation started and Mark Dosher answered questions after the talk.
Jill explained the lack of awareness about MRSA in the veterinary practice where she took her dog Bella in the end resulted in the loss of Bella. To ensure Bella did not die in vain Jill decided to campaign to improve the knowledge of pet owners like ourselves and within the veterinary profession so we are all aware of the symptoms to enable early action to be taken.
This is essential as MRSA in companion animals is normally treatable if caught early. The infection is not something caught by normal contact but problems can occur when the bacteria gets into the blood stream through a deep cut such as an operation particularly if the immune system is weakened.

Know what to look out for:
Discharge or inflammation from a surgical wound.
A wound that is not healing and not responding to regular treatment.
Raised temperature.
Loss of appetite and extreme lethargy.
Depressed demeanour.

Jill then handed over to Mark to answer questions this was followed by Anne presenting a donation to the foundation on behalf of our club. Jill responded on behalf of the foundation by thanking the club for their support.
More information on their work and MRSA can be found on the Bella Moss website.

We then moved on to the food which as last year was in the hall due to the uncertainty of the weather. About thirty of us, slightly down in numbers from last year, started eating our way through sausages, burgers with rolls and salad etc.
Members also browsed and picked up the leaflets that Jill had brought with her and had the opportunity to put further questions to her or Mark
.
Then Anne was spotted bringing out the dessert, a rather tempting assortment of gateau and cheesecake.

The raffle was then drawn for which Gloria with Norman's assistance had been selling and folding tickets during the event. As in previous years it had a great array of prizes and always takes a while to get through.

That concluded an enjoyable event and thanks must go to the stalwart organisers, such as Anne, Terry, Brenda, Janet, Joan, Mike, Mick who without their hard work it could not take place.
