Display at Lord Whisky Animal Sanctuary Fun Day
Saturday 10th
June
On a hot Saturday afternoon the display team put on a good
display in front of an appreciative audience. It is always difficult working
the dogs in a different environment to what they are used to plus all the
distractions going on around them and on the day all the dogs coped very
well.
Roger with Ben lead the team out followed by Ros with Lucy, Brenda with
Chester, Norman with Charlie, Jo with Rufus, Terry with Alfie, Sue with Tia,
Mike with Jack, Janet with Smokey.
Once the introductions were complete
and the team ready to go the display got underway with some heal work
including right circles. This was followed by leaving the dogs in the sit
and calling them to heel as the handler walks past then
recalls. The display also included
a down stay with the dogs forming a diagonal line across the ring. All the
dogs stayed in position and it was one of the straightest lines we have
achieved. Then on into dog to dog and recalling between two rows of dogs,
again the dogs worked really well. Next the circle to carryout down stays
and crossovers finishing on a shake paw and making lots of fuss of the dogs before exiting the ring.
I think all the handlers should give themselves a pat on the back and the
dogs an extra treat for such a good display. For Smokey and Jack it was
their first display with the team before an audience but you would not have
known it as they blended in so well with the 'older' hands who were in
displays last year. Well done to them and of course their handlers Janet and
Mike.
Thanks to Mick for the
commentary plus a special thank you to Jill with Raven for coming along to
support the team.
The next display the team are doing is at Wateringbury
Primary School on Saturday 17th June at 1:30pm.
Display at Wateringbury Primary School Fete Saturday 17th
June
The display team visited Wateringbury Primary School fete to
put on their second display this year. Seven
handlers and dogs, two less than last week,
Roger with Ben, Ros with Lucy, Brenda with
Chester, Jo with Rufus, Terry with Alfie, Sue with Tia and
Mike with Jack. The team filed in to begin their display in an arena about
14 metres diameter surrounded by spectators including a lot of children.
This gave a difficult atmosphere for the dogs to work in as they are not
used to so many people surrounding them. They soon settled ignoring the
distractions
and
worked
well to complete their exercises hardly
putting a paw wrong.
It was good to see the dogs being left sitting round in a circle waiting for
their turn to be put in the down and then in the down stay with handlers weaving
inside and outside of them. The fact that none of them moved until they
were told to is a credit to the handlers for the hard work they
have put in to the training.
Well done the dogs, handlers and I must say the children who sat round the
display arena and behaved so well.
After
completing the display we managed to get a group photo before having a look
round the fete. Whilst walking around the fete some children came and asked
if they could stroke the dogs. They had obviously been told the right way to
approach and check with the handler if the dogs were alright to stroke. All
credit to them for doing it.
Thanks to Anne, Terry and the team. Anne for manning
the microphone, Terry for coming into the team on display days with hardly
any practice and the team for supporting the displays and all the hard work
practicing for them.
We now have a while until the next display which will be at Stockbury fete
on 19th August.
Display at Stockbury Village Fete Saturday 19th
August
The club display team put on their third
display this year on Saturday 19th August this time at Stockbury Village
fete. Team members for this display were
Roger with Ben, Ros with Lucy, Mary with Sam, Jo with Rufus, Terry with
Alfie, Norman with Charlie, Sue with Tia, Janet with Smokey plus Mick doing
the commentary.
The display is aimed at demonstrating that pet dogs with the correct
training can achieve good social
obedience and from the positive comments to Mick Bingham
afterwards it was well received.
One of the team members missing was Mike with Jack as Mike is getting over a
recent operation, we wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to him
rejoining the team.
The team have two more displays to complete this year
, the next one is at Labrador Rescue on Sunday 3rd September and the last
one at Lord
Whisky on Saturday 9th September.
Display at Labrador Rescue Fete Sunday 3rd September
A another good show by members of Stockbury Dog Display Team
at the Labrador Rescue Kent Centre.
The
team members were Jo with Rufus, Terry with Alfie, Mary with
Sam, Janet with Smokey, Brenda with Chester, Norman with
Charlie and Sue with Tia. Thanks to them and to all families
members who come and support the team.
Last but not least Thanks to Mick ( the Alpha one ) for his
brilliant commentary.
Display at Lord Whisky Fete Saturday 9th September
We
visited Lord Whisky for the second time this year to put on our fifth and
last display for 2006. To make it slightly different to last time Roger with
Ben and Lucy gave a display of working through basic commands with two dogs
sometimes working together and sometimes independently.
This was then
followed by the main display ably carried out by Roger with Ben, Ros with Lucy, Mary with Sam,
Brenda with Chester, Terry with Alfie, Janet with Smokey plus Mick doing
the commentary. Once
again the dogs did really well coping with the distractions which seem to
vary at each venue. This time it was a couple of llamas walking around the
fete, pipes and drums being practiced plus the odd fizzy drink can being
opened with a loud psssh.
Well done to all the dogs and handlers and thank you to the Stockbury Dog
Club members and friends who came along and supported the team.
Display Round Up For 2006
I would like to start by thanking the team members for
giving up their time to support the team representing the club at
various fetes through the summer. The team members, with number of displays
this year in brackets, were:
Roger with Ben(4), Ros with Lucy(4), Mary with Sam(3), Brenda with
Chester(4), Terry with Alfie(5), Janet with Smokey(4), Norman with
Charlie(3), Sue with Tia(3), Mike with Jack(2), Jo with Rufus(4).
We managed to get a team of six to eight for each event helped by Terry and
Norman joining the team with very little practice, as you can see Terry with
Alfie completed the most displays.
This year I think we achieved the highest standard so far, attempting to get
the dogs to do more difficult tasks than previous years.
These included down stays with other handlers walking past, individual
recalls, and distance commands.
We had two newcomers to the team for this year, Mike with Jack and Janet
with Smokey, they settled in so well nobody at Lord Whisky in June would
have thought it was their first display.
Mick did a grand job on the commentary, not a easy task especially with some
of the tanoy systems he had to deal with. Thanks also to Anne who took most
of the photos used in the reports and to others who contributed photos.
It was good to see support from team member's family and friends together
with some of the club members. The dogs worked well at all the fetes
despite the various distractions going on around them and were a credit to
their handlers, reflecting the hard work put in during training sessions.
We now look forward to putting together a new display for next year and to
seeing some new faces in the team.
Thanks for your support.
Roger
